The INAMI partially refunds this reconstruction, except for some “details” : what they consider aesthetic (symmetrization, scar correction, nipple esthetics, …). Refund may vary depending on the operation, the specialist, healthcare, etc. The patient is then forced to pay herself (up to 5000 € according to testimonials!).

That was early 2016. Since then, the regulation finally changed! The “aesthetic details” are refunded to give the opportunity to all women to choose the reconstruction that suits them. For some, recover after breast cancer involves breast reconstruction and all survivors must have the opportunity to recover without financial barriers.
